Subedar Major Ujala Singh

Subedar Major Ujala Singh Order of the star of Kara George Gold Cross (1st Class)

Subedar Major Ujala Singh was the son of Ram Rattan. He was born in  Jun 1886 (exact date not known) in Village Badesara, District Hissar of undivided Punjab (now in District Bhiwani after the creation of Haryana). He was  enrolled in 6th Jat Light Infantry on 02 Dec 1906 . On 27 June 1917 he was  Commissioned (Viceroys Commission) as  Jemadar and was   promoted to Subedar on 06 Nov 1919. He was further promoted to Subedar Major on 01 Oct 1927 and retired on  31 Jan 1933.

Ujala Singh was awarded  Order of the Star of Karageorge, 1st Class, with Swords when he was a Havildar in 1915. It was a rare award by Serbia which was only granted to 21 Indian soldiers during the First World War. The award was gazetted in the Sixth Supplement to the London Gazette of Tuesday, the 13th of February, 1917 on Page 1717.

Ujala Singh’s award of Order of the Star of Karageorge, 1st Class, with Swords is also recorded on Page 54 in Hissars War Work: The Effort of a Punjab District (1914-1919).  In keeping with the traditions of the Indian Army, Subedar Major Ujala Singh’s son and grandsons followed in his footsteps and three generations of the family served in the Indian Army. Following are the details of his family memebers who had served the Army.

The last serving great grandson Col SS Ahlawat retired in 2016.

                         Col HP Singh, Hodson’s Horse and 48 Armoured Regiment –

                         Col VP Singh, 12 Kumaon

Grand Son-in-law – Brig KS Ahlawat, 3 Dogra, 10 Dogra

Great Grandson – Maj KS Ahlawat, 4 Para

                                 Col SS Ahlawat Army Service Corps

He expired in July 1944 (exact date not known)
