Sepoy R Kuldeep Lakra

Sepoy R Kuldeep Lakra hailed from Bishakha Tanga village under Ranchi district of Jharkhand. Sepoy  Lakra was the only son to his parents. For his family, farming was the main source of income. He  joined the army in 2014 when he was just 18 years old. He was inspired by his cousin who is also an Armyman. With two of his three sisters still unmarried and an ailing father at home, Lakra had learnt to shoulder responsibility from an early age.

 

Lakra after getting trained at Danapur Cantonment in Patna for about nine months got his first posting in Jammu and Kashmir. With the financial situation stabilising to an extent, the family was planning to get  Kuldeep Lakra’s marriage in his next leave. His last visit to his village was in November 2016.

 

Avalanche in Batalik Sector : 07th April 2017

 

During 2017 Sepoy R Kuldeep Lakra’s unit was deployed in Batalik sector of Ladakh region of Jammu & Kashmir, an  area which witnesses a very  heavy snowfall. On 7th Apr, 2017, an avalanches hit army posts manned by Lakra’s unit. Kuldeep Lakra while on duty along with two other comrades got swept away and went missing in the avalanche caused by this heavy snowfall. The Army launched concerted efforts and pressed the specially equipped Avalanche Rescue Teams into service to search for the missing soldiers. Their bodies were found trapped under 15 feet of snow. Sepoy R Kuldeep Lakra laid down his life in the service of the motherland at the very early age of 22 years. The death also took away the family’s only pillar of strength that had helped them gain some  stability of late.

 

Sepoy R Kuldeep Lakra is survived by his father, mother and three sisters.
