Sepoy Parabjeet Singh

Sepoy Parabjeet Singh hailed from Hakamwala village in Mansa district of Punjab. Son of Shri Jagmel Singh and mother Smt Melo Kaur, Sep Sepoy Parabjeet Singh joined the Army after completing his school education. He was recruited into 21 Punjab battalion of the Punjab Regiment, an infantry Regiment of Indian Army well known for its intrepid soldiers and numerous battle & theater honours.

Siachen Glacier Avalanche :  25 April 2021

During April 2021, Sepoy Parabjeet Singh’s unit 21 Punjab was deployed in the southern sector of the Siachen glacier in Ladakh. This sector was one of the most remote parts of the glacier and remained inaccessible during winter. The troops besides manning designated posts also operated regular patrols to monitor the area along the border. Sepoy Parabjeet Singh along with few other soldiers was on one such patrol on 25 Apr 2021. While the patrol team was traversing through the snow-clad terrain in sub-sector Haneef in southern Glacier area, a horrific avalanche struck them, giving very little time to take any action. The soldiers faced extreme risks in manning the inhospitable terrain at heights over 19,000 feet under extreme weather conditions on the world’s highest battlefield. Avalanches usually took place due to the accumulation of snow and were triggered by morning sunlight. In other cases, when the slope of accumulated snow was between 60 to 80 degrees, the instability led to an avalanche. Although the Army had a unit of the Snow Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) in Jammu and Kashmir, with several observatories at various locations to issue warnings and alerts to the Army formations and units, it could not detect this avalanche.

The rescue operation was launched by the army with a team equipped with specialized types of equipment. However, the soldiers had got buried under tons of snow and it was very difficult to locate them. Despite the herculean efforts, Sep Parabjeet Singh and Sep Amardeep Singh could not be saved, owing to their prolonged exposure to extreme cold conditions. Sep Parabjeet Singh was a brave and dedicated soldier who laid down his life in the line of his duty.

Sep Parabjeet Singh is survived by his father Shri Jagmel Singh, mother Smt Melo Kaur and a brother.

I have read the book “Letters from Kargil”, it was hard to stop the tears while reading each letter in there, it’s hard to imagine the pain the recipient of those letters must have been through. They are equally strong as they bear the pain of losing their loved ones for the safety of the nation. My immense respect to them. May God give them the strength to face the loss.

    Dear Family,

I write to you with profound respect and heartfelt condolences, honoring the unwavering courage and sacrifice of your beloved Sepoy Parabjeet Singh. His indomitable spirit and dedication have left an everlasting mark on our hearts.

In April 2021, Sepoy Parabjeet Singh stood proudly as a member of Unit 21 Punjab, deployed in the southern sector of the Siachen glacier in Ladakh. Positioned in one of the most remote and challenging parts of the glacier, his unit was tasked with both manning designated posts and conducting patrols to safeguard our borders. The sub-sector Haneef, where Sepoy Parabjeet Singh and his comrades embarked on their patrol, was a realm of snow-clad terrain and extreme weather conditions, standing as the world’s highest battlefield.

Tragically, on April 25, 2021, a devastating avalanche struck, leaving the patrol team with little time to react. The inhospitable terrain, situated at altitudes exceeding 19,000 feet, bore witness to their resilience in the face of extreme risk. Sepoy Parabjeet Singh’s dedication to his duty was unyielding, even under the constant threat of avalanches triggered by the accumulation of snow and morning sunlight.

The ensuing rescue operation, marked by herculean efforts and specialized equipment, reflected the unwavering commitment of the army to save their comrades. However, the weight of tons of snow proved insurmountable. Sepoy Parabjeet Singh, along with Sep Amardeep Singh, could not be saved due to their prolonged exposure to the severe cold conditions.

Sepoy Parabjeet Singh’s legacy is one of bravery, dedication, and sacrifice. Beyond his uniform, he was a cherished son, a beacon of pride to his father Shri Jagmel Singh, and a beloved brother. His memory will forever inspire us to value courage, honor, and the unbreakable bonds of family.

In this time of sorrow, please know that your family is not alone. The nation stands united in mourning, paying tribute to Sepoy Parabjeet Singh’s remarkable service and sacrifice.

May you find solace in the memories you shared and the knowledge that Sepoy Parabjeet Singh’s sacrifice will forever echo in the hearts of those he has inspired.

    With deepest sympathy,

    Himanshu
