In January 1948, during Indo-Pak War, Sepoy Nil Kanth’s unit was deployed in the forward area. On 17th January he was part of a leading group of the forward troops and while keeping the vigil was counter-attacked by the enemy who had succeeded in creeping in through the jungle and nullah. Sepoy Nil Kanth showed immense quality of leadership and on his own accord crawled forward from his position through the bullet swept area. He killed three of the enemies and kept hurling grenades   on them. When his grenades got over he then shouted for more grenades and meanwhile kept firing at the enemy with his rifle. During this action he was fatally injured and succumbed to his injuries on 17 January 1948.

Sepoy Nil Kanth displayed most conspicuous bravery besides camaraderie and leadership of the highest order and made the supreme sacrifice for the nation. He was awarded with “Vir Chakra” Posthumously on 26th January 1950.
