Sepoy Mustapure Shubham Suryakant hailed from Konarwadi village in Parbhani District of Maharashtra. He joined the Indian Army in 2016 and was recruited into 5 MLI of the famed Maratha Light Infantry Regiment known for its courageous soldiers and various battle and theater honours.
Sep Shubham’s father owns one and a half acres of farm in his village and also supplements his income through tailoring. Sep Shubham was very keen to join the Armed Forces and when he got recruited in the Army in 2016, after completing his 12th class, he treated the entire village to a grand feast. However, the life of this young soldier was cut short in April 2018 during cross border fire exchange as a result of unprovoked firing across the border.
During 2018 Sepoy Shubham’s unit was deployed in J&K along the LOC. India shares a 3,323-km border with Pakistan, of which 221 km of the IB and 740 km of the LOC fall in Jammu and Kashmir. The LOC is highly active and volatile where ceasefire violations occur very often and without any warning. The Krishna Ghati Sector in Poonch district of Jammu & Kashmir is the part of LOC that bears a significant number of ceasefire violations every year. During April 2018, Sepoy Mustapure Shubham Suryakant’s unit was deployed in this sector and the troops of 5 MLI were manning various forward posts along the LOC.
On 3rd April 2018 Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire in Krishnaghati Sector and started heavy mortar shelling on Indian Army Posts. Pakistan Army initiated unprovoked and indiscriminate firing from 7 am using small arms, automatic weapons and mortar shells. Indian Army retaliated strongly, effectively and proportionately to the unprovoked ceasefire violation and the exchange of fire continued for several hours. During the heavy exchange of fire, Sepoy Mustapure Shubham Suryakant got severely injured along with four other soldiers. Sep Shubham was rushed to the nearby army hospital but he succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. Sep Shubham was a disciplined and committed soldier who laid down his life in the service of the nation.
Sepoy Mustapure Shubham Suryakant is survived by his grandparents, parents and two younger brothers.
