During 2017-18, Sapper Amandeep was serving with Border Road Organisation which was engaged in operation in Kupwara area of J & K. The weather in certain far-flung areas of Jammu & Kashmir becomes very hostile sometimes with heavy snowfall and sudden avalanches. The Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE) which provides warning of avalanches in the Kashmir valley, had issued a low danger warning of level 2 in Kupawara area in the first week of Mar 2018. Sapper Mandeep’s unit was responsible to construct as well as maintain the roads in the motorable condition in that area to provide mobility to the troops deployed in the area. On 7th March 2018, Sapper Amandeep Singh was deployed in snow clearance duty in the Kupawara sector which involved the usage of a bulldozer for the assigned task.
While Sapper Amandeep Singh was driving the bulldozer to clear the snow on Farkin Keran Road, he was struck by a horrific Avalanche. The avalanche was very sudden and did not give any time to Sapper Amandeep Singh for any evasive action. Sapper Amandeep got swept away and got trapped under tons of snow. A massive rescue operation was launched by the Army team which found him buried under the snow. Sapper Amandeep was immediately evacuated and transferred to the Base Hospital in Srinagar. However, Sapper Amandeep Singh’s condition did not improve and he later succumbed to his injuries. Sapper Amandeep was valiant and committed soldier who laid down his life in the line of his duty.
