Cross-Border Firing (Sunderbani Sector): 27 Nov 2020

During Nov 2020, Sep Sukhbir Singh’s unit was deployed in Rajouri district of J&K. The unit troops were manning the forward posts in the Sunderbani sector along the LOC. The LOC remained highly active and volatile with ceasefire violations occurring very often and without any warning. The year 2019 witnessed the highest number of ceasefire violations — 3289 — by Pakistani troops since 2003. Similarly the year 2020 too continued with ceasefire violations and the number exceeded 1400 by Sep 2020. In yet another case of ceasefire violation, Pakistani troops opened unprovoked fire in Sunderbani sector along the LOC on 27 Nov 2020.

On 27 Nov 2020, Pakistan Army troops initiated unprovoked firing on Indian posts from across the border in Sunderbani Sector of Rajouri district. During that period, Sep Sukhbir Singh was manning one of the forward posts along the Line of Control in the Sunderbani sector. The Pakistani troops violated the ceasefire and resorted to heavy cross border firing using small arms, mortars and field guns. Indian army responded in a befitting manner to the Pakistani aggression and consequently, a heavy exchange of fire ensued thereafter, which continued intermittently for several hours. However, during this heavy exchange of fire, Sep Sukhbir Singh and Naik Prem Bahadur Khatri got severely injured. They were evacuated and shifted to the Army medical facility for medical treatment. However they later succumbed to their injuries and were martyred. Sep Sukhbir Singh was a valiant soldier, who laid down his life at the age of 22 years in the line of his duty.

Sep Sukhbir Singh is survived by his father Shri Kulwant Singh, mother Smt Jasbir Kaur, brother Kuldip Singh and two sisters Davinder Kaur & Kulwinder Kaur.

Patrolling the Siachen glacier or in regions where the dust storms, sand storms and blistering heat combine. Of all the inhabited places I can recall from the geography classes, our brave soldiers have beaten the odds by putting their heads on the block.
There’s something so magical about these men in uniform needless to say we’re home safe and sound because of these morally righteous men posessing extraordinary abilities and supernatural powers and a heart of gold that shines through your vigor.
We are ever grateful to you and moved and touched by the way you perform your duty unflinchingly. The willingness you have to sacrifice everything for your motherland and the fact that it reflects upon easefully is breathtaking. Thank you for reading this end to end dear soldier. God bless your family! Jay hind !!

My dad specifically pointed out the news to me, when the untimely death of Rifleman Sukhbir Singh was reported in the newspaper. His eyes were full of pride, telling me how courageous he was and what a role model he will be for the youth of our country. I salute his mother and Rifleman Sukhbir Singh, for teaching us what patriotism is and how lucky our nation is to have sons like you!!! Jai Hind.

While we sat comfortably at home,
    Huddled up, safe and warm,
    You selflessly ventured out,
To save us from the storm…
    Thanks to your selfless sacrifice,
Today we are alive and free,
    Our freedom and our honour,
We owe it all to thee…
The price you and your loved ones paid, dear hero,
    I cannot ever repay,
But I promise to ask for God to bless you and your family,
    Every single time I pray!
    Rest in peace, our hero,

Mere words cannot express the pride we feel to have such brave souls guarding our Nation but even more pride we feel is when we see how their families supported them to do so. You have our respects for it is the strength in you that has protected this strong Nation and its sovereignty. You are as much as a brave soul as he was.

He lives on through his dedication and spirit for the Nation. We salute him and you for protecting us all.

Being in Navy for almost 20 + years, and being a part of this initiative, i am feeling my self rewarded to show my gratitude to the martyr. Jai Hind. Jai Bharat
