Rifleman Abdul Hamid Chara SC

Rifleman Abdul Hamid Chara was born on 08 Mar 1975 and hailed from Dardpura village in Lolab Valley of Kupwara district of J&K. Son of Shri Laldin Chara, Rfn Abdul was named after the Param Vir Chakra awardee CQMH Abdul Hamid, who was given the nation’s highest gallantry award for his bravery during the 1965 Indo-Pak war. With that inspiration, Rfn Abdul Hamid grew up to be a sincere and hardworking boy who wanted to achieve something big in life.

He stood out among his Gujjar friends and gradually gained acceptance as a leader. He was barely fourteen years when a wave of terrorism swept through parts of the valley. The terrorists of the Al-Barq outfit once kidnapped him and forced him to join their outfit. He deserted them after a couple of days and surrendered to the Police. Being a nationalist at heart, Rfn Abdul Hamid then served with Special Operations Group (SOG) of J& K Police and provided valuable inputs leading to many successful anti-terrorist operations. Unmindful of a threat to his life to that of his family, Rfn Abdul Hamid continued to work for ushering in peace in the Lolab valley.

He continued to receive threats from the terrorist outfits who once made an unsuccessful attempt on his life with an (IED)Improvised Explosive Device attack. Following this unsuccessful bid on his life, the terrorists killed his father Shri Ladin in 2004 in a brazen attack. Consequently, Rfn Abdul Hamid joined the 162 Infantry Battalion (TA) and was posted with 18 Rashtriya Rifles Battalion.

Kupwara Operation: 12 June 2007

During June 2007, Rfn Abdul Hamid was serving with 162 Inf Bn(TA), which was operating along 18 RR Battalion, engaged in counter-insurgency operation in J&K. Based on the information received from the intelligence sources, a search and destroy operation was launched on 12 June 2007 in the Ander Nar area of Gagal in Kupwara district falling under the AOR(Area of Responsibility) of the unit. As the operation was underway, around mid-day, Rfn Abdul Hamid observed two terrorists trying to flee. He allowed them to come within five meters and noticed that terrorists were carrying Thuraya Satellite telephone.

He informed his platoon commander on radio set and crawled under dense undergrowth to cut off the escape route. The terrorists spotted Rfn Abdul Hamid and fired at him and his comrades. He received multiple gunshots and got severely injured. However, despite being seriously injured, he continued to bring down accurate fire and crawled down the hill to block the escape route. In a show of great courage and fighting spirit, he then managed to eliminate one terrorist who was later identified as Mussa, a self-styled District Commander of LeT, and allegedly the main coordinator of all terrorist activities. He eventually succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. Rfn Abdul Hamid was a brave and committed soldier who laid down his life in the line of his duty.

Rfn Abdul Hamid was given the gallantry award, “Shaurya Chakra” posthumously for his dauntless courage, camaraderie, devotion to duty, and supreme sacrifice.

The citation of Shaurya Chakra awarded to him reads:

On 12 June 2007, Rifleman Abdul Hamid Chara tasked as part of search and destroy operation in general area in kupwara district, J&K. At 13.30 hours, Rifleman Abdul Hamid Chara observed two terrorists attempting to flee target area.
