Major Shashi Pal Singh was born on 20th March 1941 at Karnal, Haryana. He was son of Mr Ram Singh.
On 14th December 1971, Shashi Pal was commanding a company of Rajput Regiment which was engaged in assaulting a railway embankment in the Sylhet sector on the eastern front. The area around the embankment was well guarded by the enemy .It was fortified with large number of men and supporting artillery. As the control of this vital position was important for the tactical advantage over the adversary in that area, it was decided to go ahead with the attack. During the assault the heavy artillery and small arms were brought down by the enemy, however, this did not deter Major Shashi Pal. Inspite of critical losses he kept on advancing towards his objective. In this process he was injured and his leading men suffered heavy casualties. Unmindful of his injuries he continued with the operation and finally succeeded in his objective; the embankment fell to Indian forces. However, Major Shashi Pal could not survive and succumbed to his injuries.
In this action he displayed gallantry courage, leadership and determination for which he was awarded with Vir Chakra posthumously.
Citation for the Vir Chakra awarded to him reads:-
On the 14th December 1971 Major Shashi Pal Singh was commanding a company of a Battalion of the Rajput Regiment which was engaged in assaulting a Railway embankment in an area in the Eastern Sector. The enemy was entrenched in well fortified positions held in strength. During the assault the enemy brought down heavy and accurate artillery and small arms fire Undettered. Major Shashi Pal Singh kept on advancing towards the objective. In the process he was injured and his leading troops suffered heavy causalities where by the assault halted. Despite his wounds, he continued to direct the operation and ultimately succeeded capturing the objective subsequently he succumbed to his injuries.
In this action Major Shashi Pal Singh displayed gallantry determination and leadership of a high order.
