Major Kapil Vinayak

Major Kapil Vinayak was born on 26th October 1974 at AFMC, Pune. He went to City Montessori School, Anand Nagar, Lucknow during early years of his education. The family moved to Jalandhar after his father’s transfer and he finished his schooling from St. Joseph’s Convent School, Jalandhar. His desire to don the olive greens made him join the Army Service Corps. and later got commissioned in the 5131 ASC Battalion of the Indian Army in 1997. He was posted at Siachen Glaciers and took part in the war at Kargil in 1999 and played his part in the success of Operation Vijay. He was later posted at Srinagar.

On 20th July, 2005 the terror group Hizbul Muzahideen planted a car bomb just outside Burnhall School. Major Vinayak, who was there became a victim of the blast. However, the school gate had closed just a few minutes back and the school children were safe but it claimed the life of Major Vinayak. His supreme sacrifice made sure that thousands of children were safe. Major Kapil Vinayak was the 10th Martyr Officer hailing from Jalandhar who sacrificed his life for the nation.

  • A few months before his posting in Srinagar, he had written to his father about his current situation. An excerpt from the letter said “father I will come back if alive, situation is very bad here.”
  • His mother visited him in his camp a few days before his death. He gave her a red carpet welcome and gifted her a Maple Gold earring. This ironically turned out to be his last gift.
  • He saw that the army family kids couldn’t go out much because of the high security zone. So he turned a wasteful piece of land nearby to a beautiful park and a place for the kids to play.
  • Major Vinayak is remembered by a Plaque at Srinagar in the army area
  • A road has been renamed after him in Jalander in his honor.
  • City Montessori School awarded Major Kapil Vinayak with the Fellow of City Montessori School (FCMS) Award -2011 at the Teachers’ Thanks Giving Function on 10 May 2011 at their World Unity Convention Centre & Auditorium at CMS Girls’ Degree College.

I was honoured to work with Sister of Major Kapil Vinayak, Dr. Vandana Vinayak, who joined Dr. Harisingh Gour University, Sagar Madhya Pradesh as Assistant Professor. During my PhD, I worked with her and still, I ask for her guidance for my research projects.
