My mother (Mrs G R Lakshmi) knew Major Hensman when she worked in the Indian Army’s accounts department in Tiruchy. She remembers him as a brave officer and a ‘pukka gentleman’. She even has his autograph in her autograph book. The other soldiers in his regiment said that he was ambushed when posted on the front during the China aggression of 1962. The Chinese soldiers asked him to surrender but he refused and was shot while reaching for his gun. Major Hensman was truly a brave son of India.
