Major Ajay Kumar SM

Major Ajay Kumar hailed from Varanasi city in Uttar Pradesh and born on 14 Nov 1964. He wanted to serve in the Armed Forces since his childhood and eventually joined the Indian Army after completing his education. He got commissioned into the 13 Mech Inf battalion of the Mechanized Infantry, an infantry Regiment well known for its gallant soldiers and various battle honours. After commissioning he joined the field unit and soon developed into a fine officer with commendable soldierly skills. Besides a dedicated soldier, he was a keen sportsman and specially excelled in field track events like 100 m /400 m races.

As Indian forces launched Op Pawan in Sri Lanka in 1987/1988, the young then Lt Ajay Sharma became a part of it. Later in the year 1996 to 1997, he was deputed to serve with Assam Rifles deployed in Manipur for counter-interagency operations. He undertook a number of operations against the insurgents in Ukhrul district of Manipur and proved his mettle as a fine soldier. Subsequently he got posted to the trouble torn Kashmir and was promoted to the rank of Major too. He soon developed an effective network of intelligence sources in the AOR (Area of Responsibility) of his unit and conducted various successful counter-intelligence operations.

Operation Rakshak : 19 May 1999

During May 1999, Maj Ajay Kumar’s unit,13 Mech Inf battalion was deployed in the Anantnag district of South Kashmir and was engaged in operations against the militants on a regular basis as part of "Operation Rakshak". The unit was also manning the forward posts in the Anantnag sector along the LOC. The Anantnag sector often saw ceasefire violations and infiltration attempts by the militants from across the border. The infiltration bids invariably were accompanied with artillery shelling and increased activity by the BAT(Border Action Team) of Pakistani forces. In an operation on 05 August 1998, Maj Ajay Kumar along with his team of soldiers successfully eliminated three hard core militants in the unit's AOR. The unit troops undertook regular area domination patrols to check any militant activity and keep the militants under pressure. Maj Ajay Kumar was leading one such area domination patrol on 19 May 1999.

On 19 May 1999, as Maj Ajay Kumar  and his comrades were undertaking the patrol on the planned route, the team came under attack by an IED blast. Maj Ajay Kumar bore the brunt of the attack and did not get time to take any retaliatory action. Maj Ajay Kumar soon succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. Maj Ajay Kumar was a committed soldier and an officer par excellence, who was known for his exemplary leadership qualities. Maj Ajay Kumar laid down his life at the age of 34 years in the line of his duty following the highest traditions of the Indian Army. He was given the gallantry award, “Sena Medal” for his courage, devotion to duty, and supreme sacrifice.
