Lt Navdeep Singh AC

Lt Navdeep Singh hailed from Gurdaspur district of Punjab and was born in a military family, wherein his father, Subedar Major Joginder Singh served in Bengal Sappers for 30 years and retired as Honorary Captain. His grandfather was a junior commissioned officer as well, making him a third-generation soldier. In 2006, he completed his graduation in hotel management from IHM-Gurdaspur and continued his education to get a Postgraduate degree in management from the Army Institute of Management, Kolkata, three years later.

However, despite his management qualification, he chose to adhere to his patriotic urge to serve the army and joined the Officers Training Academy of the Indian Army in Chennai. He was commissioned in the year 2010 into the Army Ordnance Corps, the corps responsible to provide logistics support to the Indian Army during war and peace. However Lt Navdeep Singh got his first posting to an infantry unit, 15 Maratha Light Infantry, deployed in  Jammu and Kashmir for counter insurgency operations.

Gurez sector Operation: 20 Aug 2011

During 2011, Lt Navdeep Singh’s unit was deployed in Gurez sector in north Kashmir. Lt Navdeep Singh was made the commander of the Ghatak platoon, capable of undertaking special operations. “Ghatak” is a Hindi word meaning killer or lethal and all infantry battalions have a Ghatak platoon that specializes in commando operations. On 19 Aug 2011, Lt Navdeep Singh’s unit received information that a group of 17 hard core terrorists had infiltrated into the Indian territory in the Gurez sector. The Ghatak platoon led by Lt Navdeep was tasked to stop and eliminate the dreaded terrorists. Lt Navdeep gauged the possible infiltration route and deployed his troops tactically to take on the terrorists.

Soon the terrorists were spotted in the expected area and Lt Navdeep leading from the front charged at them killing three of them. A fierce gun battle ensued with heavy exchange of fire. Lt Navdeep then saw a fourth terrorist and moved swiftly to take a position of advantage but got hit in his head. Undeterred he killed the fourth terrorist and in a show of raw courage, moved an injured soldier to safety and kept firing till he collapsed. A total of 12 terrorists were eliminated during the operation and the infiltration bid was foiled successfully.  Lt Navdeep later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred at the age of 26 years.

Lt Navdeep Singh was given the nation’s highest peace time gallantry award, ” Ashok Chakra” for his exceptional courage, indomitable spirit and supreme sacrifice.
