Lt Pawan Kumar Singh’s foundation for the Army was laid in Rashtriya Indian Military College(RIMC) Dehradun , where he studied from 1955 to 1959. Later he joined the prestigious NDA at Khadakwasla and was commissioned in the year 1962 as 2nd Lieutenant. An outstanding football and volleyball player, Lt P K Singh was a committed soldier and a very fine officer.
In the early part of his service career, Lt P K Singh got an opportunity to display his soldierly skills, when his unit got deployed in the western front during the Indo-Pak war of 1965.

Though India occupied the strategic Haji Pir pass located south of Uri and about 8 Km from the cease fire line, on 28 Aug 1985, the fuil scale war broke out on 01 Sep 1965. On that day Pakistan invaded Chamb district in J & K, triggering one of the largest armoured and infantry battles, and a series of daring and bloody operations. The cease fire resolution adopted by the security council finally came into effect on 23 Sep 1965, but the skirmishes still continued on various fronts.
On 26 Sep 1965, in one such battle Lt P K Singh got severely injured and was martyred.
