Lance Naik Nishan Singh hailed from Bhaudin village of Sirsa district in Haryana and was born in the year 1993. After completing his initial education he joined the Indian Army in the year 2013 at the age of 20 years. He was recruited into 14 Sikh LI battalion of the Sikh Light Infantry Regiment, a regiment well known for its gallant soldiers.
After serving for some time with his parent unit, he was deputed to serve with the 19 RR Battalion, deployed in J&K for counter-insurgency operations. L/Nk Nishan Singh got married to Ms Ramandeep in the early 2022. By the year 2022, L/Nk Nishan Singh had put in around 9 years of service and had served in various challenging operational areas.
Anantnag Operation: 16 Apr 2022
During Apr 2022, L/Nk Nishan Singh’s unit,19 RR battalion was deployed in the Anantnag district of South Kashmir and was engaged in operations against the militants on a regular basis. After joining the RR battalion, L/Nk Nishan Singh took part in a number of counter-insurgency operations and honed his field craft skills. On 16 Apr 2022, the security forces received credible information from the intelligence sources about the presence of terrorists in Watnar village in Kokernag area of Anantnag district. Based on the intelligence inputs 19 RR troops along with the Special Operation Group of J & K Police and CRPF launched a search and destroy operation in the suspected area on 16 Apr 2022. L/Nk Nishan Singh was made part of the 19 RR team that was assigned the task of this operation.
On 16th Apr 2022, at about 1500 hrs, L/Nk Nishan Singh and his comrades reached the suspected area and launched the search and cordon operation. As the operation was underway, the militants felt cornered and started firing at the troops. The militants were heavily armed and were firing at the troops from vantage points. But L/Nk Nishan Singh and his comrades continued to give a befitting reply to the firing by militants. However, during this exchange of fire L/Nk Nishan Singh got hit by a bullet and was critically wounded. He was immediately evacuated to 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar for medical treatment. However, L/Nk Nishan Singh later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. L/Nk Nishan Singh was a brave and dedicated soldier who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation at the age of 29 years.
