 L/Hav Nar Bahadur Ale MVC

Lance Havaldar Nar Bahadur Ale was born on on 15 July 1954, at Kaitar village in Dailekh district of Nepal. Son of Shri Bal Bahadur Ale, L/Hav Nar Bahadur joined the Indian Army on 15 July 1972 at the age of 18 years. He was enrolled into 3/4 GR battalion of 4 Gorkha Rifles Regiment, an infantry Regiment known for its gallant soldiers with a rich history of various battle exploits.

After serving for some time, he got married to Ms Kamla Devi and the couple had four daughters, Mina Kumar, Sushma Kumari, Sunita Kumari and Mamta Kumari. By 1987, he had put in around 15 years of service and had been promoted to the rank of Lance Havaldar. By then he had served in various field areas and developed into a battle-hardened soldier.

Siachen Operation :  23-24 Sep 1987

During Sep 1987, L/Hav Nar Bahadur Ale’s unit was deployed in Siachen Glacier as part of Operation Meghdoot. As a response to Pakistani misadventure in June 1987, Indian Army took over Quaid Post at Bilafond La in ‘Operation Rajiv’ and renamed it as ‘Bana Post’ after Nb Sub Bana Singh of 8 JAK LI. Since then the enemy troops continued their aggression at regular intervals in an attempt to occupy the lost ground. One more such attempt was made on 23 Sep 1987 when a determined attack was launched at the Indian Post at Bilafond La complex. L/Hav Nar Bahadur Ale was functioning as medium machine gun detachment commander at the Bilafond La complex. The enemy troops started heavy shelling and simultaneously launched an attack, which was beaten back largely because of the accurate and effective fire of L/Hav Nar Bahadur’s medium machine gun.

Again, on the night of 24 September l987, the enemy troops launched a determined attack in overwhelming strength. In spite of heavy artillery shelling and missile fire, L/Hav Nar Bahadur’s detachment succeeded in blunting the attack. However, a direct hit by the enemy’s artillery shell incapacitated both crew members of his detachment. Though severely injured and bleeding profusely, he picked up the medium machine gun, fired from his hip and succeeded in breaking the assault just 50 yards short of the post leaving at least 15 enemy soldiers dead. Even after this, L/Hav Nar Bahadur refused to be evacuated and was instrumental in beating back two more attacks. Later he succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. L/Hav Nar Bahadur was a courageous soldier, who laid down his life in the line of his duty, following the highest traditions of the Army. L/Hav Nar Bahadur was given India’s second highest gallantry award, “Maha Vir Chakra” for his exceptional valour, devotion to duty and supreme sacrifice.

L/Hav Nar Bahadur Ale is survived by his wife Smt Kamala Devi Ale and four daughters Mina Kumari, Sushma Kumari, Sunita Kumari and Mamta Kumari.

Citation For Maha Vir Chakra awarded to him reads :

Lance Havildar Nar Bahadur Ale was inducted as medium machine gun detachment commander at the Bilafondla complex. On the night of 23/24 September 1987, the adversary’s troops started heavy shelling and simultaneously launched an attack, which was beaten back largely because of the accurate and effective fire of his medium machine gun. Again, on the night of 24 September l987, the adversary’s troops launched a determined attack in overwhelming strength. In spite of heavy artillery shelling and missile fire, his detachment succeeded in blunting the attack. However, a direct hit by the enemy’s artillery shell incapacitated both crew members of his detachment. Though severely injured and bleeding profusely, he picked up the medium machine gun, fired from his hip and succeeded in breaking the assault just 50 yards short of the post leaving at least 15 dead. Even after this Lance Havildar Ale refused to be evacuated and was instrumental in beating back two more attacks. Later he succumbed to his injuries.

Thus Lance Havildar Nar Bahadur Ale displayed conspicuous bravery in the face of adversary’s troops and finally made the supreme sacrifice in the highest tradition of the Army.
