Citation :
Lance Havildar Gian Chand was a platoon commander in a battalion of Rajput Regiment- which had put up a roadblock in an area in the Eastern Sector- The enemy made repeated attempts to dislodge our troops from the roadblock by bringing down accurate artillery- mortar and automatic fire- Lance Havildar Gian Chand spotted an enemy bunker from where heavy machine gun fire was inflicting casualties on the troops- With complete disregard for his safety- he took a light machine gun and started crawling towards the enemy bunker- In the process- he was seriously wounded but he carried on unmindful of his injuries- When he was within a few yards of the bunker- he sprayed it with his light machine gun and lulled all the five occupants- He foiled all attempts by the enemy to regain control of the bunker- Before medical help could reach the bunker- Lance Havildar Gian Chand succumbed to his injuries- In this action- Lance Havildar Gian Chand displayed gallantry and determination of a high order.
