He joined the Army at the age of 18 years on 13 Sept 2001, after completing his education in his native place. He was recruited into the 6 Jat battalion of the well-known Jat Regiment, an infantry regiment widely respected for its intrepid soldiers and numerous battle exploits.

After serving for some time with his parent unit, he was deputed to serve with the 34 RR Battalion, deployed in J&K for counter-insurgency operations.  By the year-2021, Hav Pinku Kumar had put in around 20 years of service and developed into a dedicated soldier with commendable devotion to duty.

Shopian Operation: 27 Mar 2021

During Jul 2021, Hav Pinku Kumar's unit 34 RR was deployed in the Shopian district of J & K along the LOC. As a number of militants were active in the unit’s AOR(Area of Responsibility), the unit troops had to maintain a very high state of preparedness at all times and had to undertake operations at a short notice. Based on the information from the intelligence sources, about the presence of some hardcore militants in the Wangam area of the Shopian district, the security forces decided to launch a search and cordon operation in the suspected area on 27 Mar 2021. Hav Pinku Kumar was made part of the team that was assigned the task of undertaking this operation.

In the evening of 27 March 2021, Hav Pinku Kumar and his comrades reached the suspected area as planned and launched the operation. Hav Pinku Kumar was part of the inner cordon during the operation. Hav Pinku Kumar and his buddy Sep Sushil Rathi were covering the most likely escape route of the terrorists.  At approximately 2015 hours in a bid to escape, two terrorists rushed out of the target house towards the street while firing indiscriminately and lobbing grenades. Hav Pinku Kumar tactically re-oriented his position in a split-second decision and engaged them with accurate fire. By this action, he managed to eliminate one hardcore terrorist. In the ensuing exchange of fire, the second terrorist took a detour and hid behind the retaining wall of a house. Despite knowing about the grave risk to his own life, Hav Pinku stealthily closed on to the hiding terrorist and engaged him in close combat. In the exchange of fire, Hav Pinku injured the second terrorist. However, he sustained a grievous gunshot wound on his head and later succumbed to his injuries. Hav Pinku Kumar was a valiant and dedicated soldier, who laid down his life in the service of the nation. Hav Pinku Kumar was given the nation’s third-highest gallantry award “Shaurya Chakra” posthumously on 26 Jan 2022, for his commendable bravery, devotion to duty, camaraderie and supreme sacrifice.

Hav Pinku Kumar is survived by his father Shri Jabar Singh Dangi, mother Smt Kamlesh Devi, wife Smt Kavita Devi, daughters, Shailly and Anjali, son Arnav and brother Shri Manoj Kumar.
