Counter-Insurgency Operation: 21 May 1989

During May 1989, Capt Ashish Ravindra Chandorkar was serving with 15 Raj Rif battalion deployed in Assam. As the AOR(Area of Responsibility) of the unit was affected by militancy, the unit troops were engaged in operations against the militants on a regular basis. The unit launched regular patrols to monitor suspicious activities as part of their operations to keep militancy under check. The militants invariably belonged to ULFA (The United Liberation Front of Assam) a designated revolutionary rebel organization, which sought to establish an independent state of Assam.  At that time, Assam was in a very fragile and volatile state owing to the frequent insurgent activities. The government adopted a cautious wait-and-watch approach to handle the situation but the situation was very tense and chances of clashes were always there. Consequently, the unit troops had to maintain a high state of alert at all times and be prepared for operations against the militants at a short notice. Based on the information from the intelligence sources, about the presence of ULFA insurgents in an area under its AOR, the unit decided to launch an operation on 21 May 1989. Capt Ashish Ravindra was tasked to lead the operation along with a team of soldiers from his unit.

As planned Capt Ashish Ravindra along with his soldiers reached the suspected area and launched the search and cordon operation.  As Capt Ashish and his comrades were traversing through the challenging terrain during the operation, there was a massive mine blast. The blast had a devastating effect, injuring Capt Ashish and few other soldiers severely. Capt Ashish faced the brunt of the blast and absorbed most of the splinters, thereby screening his comrades behind him. He later succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. Capt Ashish Ravindra Chandorkar was a valiant soldier and determined officer, who laid down his life at the age of 23 years in the line of his duty.

Ashish was my little brother although a cousin. I have spent a lot of time during his childhood and school days with him . My Aunt , that’s his mother was very proud of him serving for the country and so did we all in the family as he was the youngest. My brother and most of relatives are or were from army., But i was unable to take in the shock of Ashish’s sudden death but proud at the same time that he died for the country.
