Rajouri Sector Operation (J&K) : 17 July 2010

During 2010,  ALD Ganpat Ram Puniya’s unit  48 RR battalion was deployed in the Rajouri district of J&K. The unit troops were deployed in the Rajouri sector along the LOC. The LOC was highly active and volatile where cease-fire violations occurred very often and without any warning. It was also used by the terrorists for infiltration with the connivance of Pakistani security forces. The infiltration by the terrorists was invariably attempted under the cover of artillery fire or with the help of the Border Action Team(BAT). Based on the information from the intelligence sources, about the presence of some hardcore terrorists in the Sokkas Nakka area of the Rajouri district, the security forces launched a search and cordon operation on 17 Jul 2010. ALD Ganpat Ram Puniya was part of the team that was assigned the task of conducting this operation.

The operation was launched in the early morning of 17 Jul 2010. ALD Ganpat Ram Puniya and his comrades reached the suspected area and launched a search & cordon operation. The terrorist on being cornered & challenged opened fire at the troops, wherein ALD Ganpat Ram Puniya played a key role in displaying commendable courage and superior fieldcraft skills. However, during the exchange of fire, ALD Ganpat Ram received gunshots and was seriously injured.  ALD Ganpat Ram was immediately shifted to the nearby medical facility for treatment. However, he succumbed to his injuries and was martyred. ALD Ganpat Ram Puniya was a gallant and committed soldier, who laid down his life at the age of 28 years in the service of the nation.

ALD Ganpat Ram Puniya is survived by his wife Smt Manohari Devi, daughter Pooja and sons Prem Kumar & Mukesh Kumar.
